5 ways to a strong and healthy immune system

Your good health is your most valuable possession. For some of us that possession is rather elusive sense it seems that we are magnets for everything that is going around. Short of living in a hazmat suit all the time what can we do to keep those ugly bugs at bay?

It is important to understand that the key to staying healthy amidst the flues, colds and other diseases going around is a strong and healthy immune system. Here are 5 ways to make it strong and keep it strong.

A rainbow of fruits and vegetables.

The more color in your fruits and vegetables the better the nutrition they contain. Your immune system needs as much nutrition as it can get. So eat as large a variety of colors in your fruits and vegetables as you can, reds, yellows, greens, purple, the works. This includes oranges, red peppers, beets, broccoli, sweet potato, pumpkin and others like these.

Don’t forget water.

All living things need water. Sometimes it is easy to forget that water is an essential nutrient, and our immune system needs water to flush out those bad bugs and their toxins. So make sure you drink plenty of water. Tea on a cold day can be just as refreshing as iced coffee on a hot day.

Vitamin D, anyone?

Vitamin D helps the immune system do what it does. So we need vitamin D in our bodies. However the body uses sunshine to make vitamin D. And for some of us sunshine is hard to come by in some seasons.

So we have to turn to food to get it. Oily sea food such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines are a good way to get your Vitamin D. Also look for foods fortified with vitamin D. These would include milk in all its forms, and yogurts.

Herbal immune boosters.

There are several effective herbal immune boosters. Echinacea is one that readily comes to mind but there are other less well known such as Astragalus Membranaceus best known in traditional Chinese medicine. Besides improving the immune system it also offers cardiovascular protection, a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory and reduces cortisol the bodies stress hormone.

Olive leaf extract.

Olive leaves have been shown to be effective against microbes that cause disease. Oleuropein is thought to be responsible for this.

So, maybe we can’t avoid all the microbes out there that can make us sick but we can do something about our immune system so that it will be ready for them when they come.
