Super Foods

Melissa Carr DrTCM, RAc lecturer and doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, was asked what she was watching in her trend list, what was interesting her in the area of research. Here are some of her more interesting answers.

Golden milk

Golden milk is interesting because of its main ingredient turmeric. Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory and improves liver function. Mixed with other spices like cinnamon and ginger in warm milk, golden milk makes for a healthy warm drink on a cold day.


Juicing can provide a powerful nutrient rich drink. Juicing concentrates the phytonutrients, vitamins and minerals so you can boost your intake of them. Of course you shouldn’t neglect eating whole fruits and vegetables.

Local super-foods

The idea of super-foods often brings up visions of faraway places to go and get them. However local farmers can grow foods just as super. In this case super doesn’t necessarily mean exotic or unusual.


In terms of numbers what is sitting in your chair is more probiotic microbes than you. So managing your probiotic microbes is important. You can get the “good guy” bacteria in fermented foods like sauerkraut and yogurt. Make sure you get the live culture variety and not the pasteurized kind.

Root to stem and snout to tail cooking

Wasting food is not a good idea. It is not only more expensive, it aggravates food shortages. Why not use all the plant and all the animal meat rather than tossing parts that could be used if only the cooks were more creative.


Emails, social media, blogs and just about anything else is tied to your cell phone and can stress you out. With your cell phone around there’s no place to hide. Unplugging simply means turning off your cell phone and putting it away for one whole day. There is even a day for it, March 9-10. Many studies show that the staying constantly connected is creating stress.

Quiet time

Many people live with constant background noise. But quiet time—really quiet—time is important. Make quiet time for yourself even if you need to use ear plugs.


Getting your Zs or very restful sleep is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. You can’t be healthy if you don’t get enough sleep. Good sleep hygiene can help as well.
